Why is Batman’s city called Gotham City?

Batman’s Gotham City

Gotham City, this is where the caped crusader cleans the dirt of the streets. Gotham actual was a nickname for New York, the nickname was given by American Writer Washington Irving in 1807. He felt that New York was the home of people who talked really fast and acted like they knew about everything. Irving took the name from a story about King John on how he wanted to build a regal state near the town of Gotham in England but the citizens didn’t like the idea because of the taxes needed to build it. The citizens really overreacted like most New Yorkers do in these situations. The king eventually changed his mind.

Washington Irving was also the man who wrote the book The Legend Of A Sleepy Hollow, which went on to become one of the most memorable pieces of his writing.
