Why is a reconstructive Surgery called a Plastic?

Facial and corporal surgery first came to be in practice first in India around 600 BC when noses have been cut off, that was some kind of severe punishment. They would put back some skin in place, the skin of the forehead into the nose area. These surgeries were done to criminals so they could return to the society. But now days it’s not given to criminals but high end celebs and recently even anyone with the right amount of cash and willingness to take the risk.

The word plastikos, “to mold into shape” is what it means, plastic arts are those of sculpture and ceramics. The term became in use when a famous medical book about surgeries got published in 1838. The word plastique was used to describe reconstructive surgery by the French Surgeon Desault.
