Why is a leisure work called a “hobby”?

I mean what does the hobby actually mean? It has no roots to anything related to fun or pastimes. We all know what a hobby is, it is something we do pass our time and have some fun. But most hobbies are done for ourselves and not for someone else which is what separates it from work. People express their individuality in hobbies, such as sports or many of the other hobbies existing. The word originates from the child’s toy, hobby horse, which was a stick made out of wood with a horse’s head. Kid’s would emulate riding a horse with it for fun. So since then anyone doing something for escapism and pleasure, not for money, that something was called a hobby.

Did you know that this hobby horse toy was also sometime called a cock horse. It is believed the word appeared in France around 14th century for the first time.
