Why do we say “rise and shine” in the morning?

When we want to wake someone up in the morning we say to them “rise and shine”. But do they actually do rise and shine? and where does this weird English expression come from?

The Marine Way

The term was born in the marines rigorous camps. The men who wanted to become marines need to wake up really early in the morning, a person would go in the barracks and would shout “rise and shine”, which would mean for the others to wake up and clean their boots for checking. Did you know the marines were created in the 1700s. They were used to fight alongside the British Forces, before coming into their own.
