What is Appetite Loss and how to overcome it?

Appetite Loss refers to that state of mind in which you will find no interest in eating and would be more inclined to avoid taking food, partly due to not feeling hungry and partly due to dislike for taking food.

The anticipation for taking foods is referred to as Appetite, and this Appetite is the one that stimulates us to take food and get energized for survival in this world. In other words, Appetite refers to an unconscious response and a learned behavior towards intake of food. This appetite is controlled by two centers in our brain – one is the hypothalamus, which stimulates the release of hunger-producing hormones until the hunger is satisfied, and the other is the cerebral cortex, the center of intellectual and sensory function.

Many disorders and circumstances cause loss of appetite. Some of the most common causes for loss of appetite temporarily might be an upset stomach, cold, dental problem or stress. These temporary conditions can be overcome after a passage of time, say a day or two at the maximum, and the normal parity would be restored. However, if one were to experience this loss of appetite for a prolonged period, then consultation of a specialist doctor is advisable as that condition might lead to serious illness such as clinical depression, anemia, kidney disease, or cancer.

Nutritional deficiency is one of the reasons for loss of appetite. Absence of Vitamin C, zinc, biotin, niacin and thiamin in our daily intake of lesser intake of these ingredients in our food might be one of the reasons for loss of appetite. Yet another reason for loss of appetite is excessive intake of alcohol. This excessive intake not only reduces the appetite but also causes nutritional deficiencies. Some sort of control in consumption of alcohol is very much advised to avoid loss of appetite. Smoking also curtails appetite and needs to be kept under check.

Drinking large quantities of liquid, such as water, before a meal also reduces the appetite and curbs the quantity of food you eat.

Loss of Appetite is a common phenomenon and gets corrected with recovery. For example, if you are suffering from stomach upset and may not be interested in taking meals, the resulting temporary loss of appetite will be rectified once your stomach upset is cured and you feel hungry to take meals. If you were a victim of prolonged loss of appetite, then some simple things as detailed below can be tried by you in addition to visiting a doctor for consultation.

  • 1.Eat small snacks at short intervals than consuming heavy meals twice or thrice a day.
  • 2.You can have a lemon drop before starting a meal as the sour saliva present in the lemon drop might stimulate the appetite.
  • 3.More than the eating, the atmosphere around the place also has a role to play in the intake of meals. Something like a candle light in the dining table, some soft music to ears and such other trivial things might also impact the appetite positively.
  • 4.Some sort of activity such as walking just before the meals also stimulates the appetite.
