5 interesting things about famous people

November 6th, 2009

You probably know many interesting things about famous people. The fact that they are famous incites people to want to know more about them and this curiosity sometimes leads to the strangest discoveries about them. The following facts about some famous names will amaze you since they have more to do with misplaced identities of people.

The Time Magazine is an annual magazine in the United States. It awards a person every year with the Man of the Year award for having influenced the society at large. Here are some misplaced awards given to famous people.

• The Time Magazine’s Man of the Year in 1938 was – ADOLF HITLER, and in 1939 and 1942, it was JOSEPH STALIN: Now what do you have to say about this?

• The Time Magazine’s blunder does not end there. The Time Magazine Man of the Year in 1952 was – QUEEN ELIZABETH II. Now what did not give away the misplaced title? Fortunately, given that the title seemed more sexist, the word ‘Man’ was scrapped off from the title and replaced with ‘Person’ instead in 1999.

All of us know of the genius called Albert Einstein. How many of you knew these things about him?

• Albert Einstein enjoyed the citizenship of four nations in his lifetime – Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and United States of America. He was also offered the Presidency of Israel in 1952. He however, declined the offer, because he said that he did not have the mind to handle the complexities of a state.

• As a child, Einstein took a long time to learn to speak and his parents thought he was suffering from some mental disorder and were worried that he was retarded. In retrospect, his parents must not only be proud of him but probably even thank their fortune for the way things turned out. Who could have imagined that a boy with speech difficulties would one day leave the rest of the world speechless with his works?

Science has scientists and scientists have inventions and discoveries to their names. However, we all tend to be mistaken about some inventions that were made. Take this one for example.

• If you thought that the light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison, then like 90% of the rest of the world, you are wrong and need to check your facts again. The light bulb was invented by Joseph Swan. Sir Joseph Swan invented the incandescent light bulb and was granted a patent for it in 1878. In fact, the first house in the entire world to be lit up by a bulb was his. Edison went on to invent a practical electric light bulb that lasted longer than the other bulbs. Even though his work was strikingly similar to Swan’s he managed to get a patent for his work in America while Swan retained his rights in Britain. Edison also began a campaign where he claimed that he was the actual inventor of the bulb. Perhaps, that is why we continue to believe that Edison gave us our light bulbs.
