Shortest English sentence using all the letters of the alphabet

August 25th, 2008

You already know the longest name, the longest English word, the hairiest family and many other stuff. But this time around I want to share with you guys, the shortest English sentence ever using all the letters of the alphabet. There are 26 letters in the English alphabet. A complete English sentence must have a subject and predicate. You cannot have a complete sentence without them. Thus coming up with the shortest English sentence that uses all the letters of the alphabet is not an easy task. By the way, a sentence that contains all letters of the alphabet is called Pangram. Such sentences are also called holalphabetic sentences. Further to clear up things, the shortest complete sentence using all the English alphabet is not “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” which is stated by WikiAnswers. The fact that it is not the shortest is because it is 35 letters whereas the shortest one is 31 letters only.

Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz

Next time you are talking to your english teacher make sure that you throw this one on him/her. A good one for class discussion.

People who read this also read

  1. The longest English word
  2. Most common words in the English language
  3. Why is the word late used to describe the recently deceased?
  4. Why do the English call the pound, a “quid”?
  5. Why are Americans Called Yanks/Yankees ?

its funny how people argue over comment and stuff just like youtube.

good that another guy found a shorter version.

I read it on newspaper a long time ago and did some research and didn’t find any shorter so I posted this one.

But thanks to everyone for submitting their versions which are shorter and better.

    Good job..

    @@@@Tony

What can i say. I am not sure when and where I tried to be a pathetic person and ignore that my readers left comments that make sense and answer few questions and not only that but also give a shorter sentence. You must be really lonely in life to waste your precious hour of life bitching online.
I said don’t argue because I have access to comments and I see lots of vulgar language used and I have to delete them and that is the reason I said no need to argue. I never said I was always wrong.

If I were you I would chill out and go out a lot more than baby crying here…

Further, if I were a pathetic guy, I wouldn’t approve your comments. I would have edited and wrote something else. I could have edited each and every comment that are rude and try to bash me. But I have not because I like it that way I want to hear others speak and I love being corrected that is how we learn I reckon, but guys like you JUMP to conclusions without thinking for a second.

Ok if this guy was pathetic he wouldn’t approve our comments at first place.

be good and do good, else you will be in trouble in life in society.

Do you hate teachers so much? Students as well as teachers should know that teachers don’t know everything.

Out of all the sentances I have seen here, the shortest is still “Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz” All the rest of these use improper grammer, are missing letters, or require punctuation.

The use of commas does not make something cease to be a sentence.

I noticed that some people can’t find the “f” and “y”.
Meh, it’s pretty common. Some can’t process f in the word “of”.
    But good job anyway! :D
