Origins Of The Word Barbarian
February 1st, 2010
The word barbarian is one that we hear often, it is sometime used to describe a group of a people or a person, most of the time it is to describe someone who is rude and rough or even wild. In ancient times, Greek and Romans would call strangers, foreigners Barbaroi meaning that they babbled in a strange language( which has it’s roots to the word babble too). Roman citizens would often shave their beards to look civil(in their culture), the non Romans in the city would not shave their beards or barbas, that may contributed to the fact that they were labelled barbarians..
