Well let us face it we live in a media centered world. People around the world are hooked on celebrity news and of course the juicy gossip! This is not a new phenomenon. The first celebrities were Gods of Greek and Roman Pantheons. During the Renaissance, artists took center stage. Our interest in the stars of Hollywood goes back to the early years around 1911. By the 40’s and 50’s magazine sales took off. It is all about Hollywood and its stars! The inception of the internet we could find out all about stars and their lives. Then came reality television in the 90’s, which could make anyone a star. Why are we so up close and personal with people we have never even met! The paparazzi play an important role and have no shortage of footage. They are just people like us, or are they? There are three reasons for our obsessions:
1.Identity- This is where a person identifies with the star. They wish they could be that person.
2.Diversion- It gives depressed people something else to focus on, is pleasing, and gives them a lift.
3.Esteem Build up- It makes us feel better about our lives when we read the latest horrible news about the stars.
If you listen to the experts are lives are boring and mundane. Why wouldn’t we want to fantasize about living the life of our favorite stars? It all boils down to wanting something we cannot have but enjoying the fact that we can still be a part of it. We all want to imagine the cars, the houses, the riches. We all want to be rich and of course beautiful handsome and thin. We love looking at the stars and their clothes and makeup and latest fashion trends. They pull us into love, hate, relationships and gossip of course. It is a fact that Hollywood stars make millions from their fans so they love to see them. The tabloids, television and papers churn out false gossip about the stars everyday and people rush for the newsstands. Our obsession with Hollywood is not slowing down any time soon. As long as there are stars, there will be people who love them, hate them or want to be them!
It seems a certain actor and woman by a certain actor enthrall men. For instance, my husband thinks Angelina Jolie is gorgeous. I think he is blind but that is another issue. The more movies and paraphernalia that comes out the more people will buy it just to see those beloved stars. Can this turn into an obsession? Well for some it has. That is why there are star stalkers out there. However, for most people it is just harmless curiosity and fantasy. It is just a harmless diversion from our own lives, jobs, families and everyday responsibilities. We all wish we had the kind of wealth, beauty and intrigue that the stars have. However, since that will probably never happen we continue to be obsessed with movie stars.
What if you had to decide the Seven Wonders of the World? Can you imagine how daunting that would be? The original Seven Wonder originated around 200 B.C. Today there is a World Panel of experts. Sites are nominated from votes and people from around the world. 100 million people took part in the poll from over 200 countries. This was the brainchild of Bernard Weber from Switzerland. The panel took 77 sites and narrowed it to 21. It was put to a vote in 2006 and overseen by the president Professor, Doctor Federico Mayor Zaragoza. The picks were based on architectural, cultural and overall beauty of the monuments and structures. The structures had to be in place before 2000. On July 7, 2007, the new list was released.
It takes years and a lot of input from people either through online voting or through other means to come to a decision. There are so many sites that they cannot all be part of the great seven. They are marked in other ways, through categories like wonders of the ancient world, wonders of the medieval world and so on. It was a big event in Portugal when the announcement came with performances from stars like Jennifer Lopez and Chaka Khan. Hosts included Hilary Swank and Ben Kingsley. Hilary was quick to point out that this was a first for the greatest number of online voters in history. Pamphlets, pictures, and information were handed out. The Unseco and others protested the online voting method. So what is the Seven Wonders of the World?
1. Chichen Itza- Mexico
2. Christ Redeemer- Brazil
3. The Coliseum- Italy
4. Taj Mahal- India
5. The Great Wall- China
6. Petra- Jordan
7. Machu Picchu- Peru
Young and old want to know about the Seven Wonders of the World and flock to internet sites to find information. Of course, it would be great to see them in person, but let us face it that may not be in the budget! There were cheers and hugs from the people of the countries chosen. “Christ is a Wonder”! One Brazilian cheered. Then there were others upset that no Catholic symbols were chosen. Other countries felt some of their monuments should have won out. Well you cannot please everyone, especially in this huge decision. The world is full of beautiful structures and the list would be a lot longer if we included them all!
It is very hard to find someone who has not cheated on a partner, sometime in his or her lives. We all have skeletons in our closet whether we like to admit it or not. One study put the risk for infidelity in a relationship at between 40 to 76 percent. That is a high percentage. Other researchers think it is in our genes. It does not matter whether you are male or female we all have the potential to cheat. So what pushes us to cheat? Could it be we are scared of intimacy? Are we unhappy with our current partners? Do we feel insecure? Well all of the above could be true. Everyone has his or her own reasons for cheating.
Yes, this is a visually driven society. Women and men both try to look good and be sexy to the opposite sex. Therefore, there will always be that good-looking person who is not your partner. I think it is human nature to be attracted to other people. It is what you do about those feelings that count. Cheating is not all about the sex. People cheat because they are not emotionally connected to their partners. They may be looking for that love and understanding from someone else. Infidelity is the number one reason for marriages and relationships ending. The problem is that the person cheated on feels hatred, resentment and revenge.
Another interesting factor people cheat is to control the relationship. When their partner does not hear them, they will cheat. If your partner feels hollow and not worthy, they will cheat. It could just be that there is too much fighting. We all have arguments but sometimes the fighting can take over your relationship. It can cloud everything else. If you start arguing over the smallest things, it could start a cycle of hatred from one or both partners making it easier to cheat. The partners will inevitably seek out other people that they feel understand them better and will not argue with them.
People tend to be stuck in relationships. They develop the same old patterns. The relationship gets boring and there is not excitement. It is important to keep your partner guessing and try new things. Having a regular date night is also very important to keep that bond between you. It is important that you and your partner are friends. However, there is a fine line between friends and lovers. The longer you are in a relationship the easier it is to fall into the friend pattern. You need to keep a balance between being friends and being lovers. You need to keep that sexual connection to avoid any neglectful feelings in your relationship.
Staying in a relationship takes hard work. It is a day-to-day issue. You have to make your partner feel special. You can never be sure that your partner will be faithful even if you are. However, if you follow these tips and advice you will be closer to that honest and open relationship and farther away from the temptation to cheat.
