Burger King got its start in Miami, Florida during the year of 1954. The corporation was started by James McLamore and David Edgerton. Both men were already in the restaurant business. It was sold to Pillsbury in 1967. The idea was a restaurant where people could come to get good food and a pleasant atmosphere. There are actually 11,000 Burger King Restaurants worldwide. In fact, Burger King can be found in all 50 states in the U.S. and you can find this fast food chain in more than 65 countries. There are more than 7,300 restaurants in the U.S. alone. You can find Whoppers with mustard in Texas and breakfast burritos in the Southwest. This goes back to giving the customer what they want.
Burger King is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world! Ninety percent of the locations are independently owned and many by families and have been for many decades. The Whopper was introduced in 1957 which was three years after the restaurant opened. The Whopper became the most popular item! The original Whopper sold for $.37 cents. At that price and the amount of meat they were able to take business away from their competitor McDonalds. There have been more than 1.3 million sandwiches sold each year worldwide. Every year they prepare more than 950,000 pounds of bacon for their sandwiches! Ellen DeGeneres in her first stand up act ate a Whopper, fries and a shake.
In the U.K. and Ireland you can find a Dark Whopper Sandwich which contains pepper jack cheese, black pepper, ketchup and grill sauce. Burger King has over 30,300 employees. This is only employees working in company restaurants, offices and headquarters. Burger King actually sugar coats their fries so they will turn golden brown. Burger King has given a lifetime supply of free hamburgers to at least 11 celebrities including Jay Leno, Hugh Laurie and Jennifer Hudson. With advertising flopping the company hired Crispin Porter and Bogusky to revamp the advertising and “the king” himself in the seventies and eighties.
From all the advertising they received around $367 million in dividends. Burger King actually partnered with George Lucas and promoted the movie “Star Wars.”The Burger King Franchise decided to also partner with Disney and Pokémon in 1999 and saw revenues soar from 1990-2000 from films like Beauty and the Beast and Toy Story!
