A primer on Vitamins that our body needs

One of the key components that keeps us functioning normally on a day-to-day basis is the contentof vitamins in our normal consumption of food intake.

What are these vitamins?

Vitamins are nothing but essential chemicals that our body requires, of course in small quantities, for effective functioning of the body on a daily basis. There is not just one single vitamin that is consumed by the body but there are a number of vitamins, and each of the those vitamins have different roles to play. More than one vitamin combines with the other as well to keep the body running. The vitamins we need on a daily basis have been categoized as Vitamin A, Group of vitamins under the head Group B, Folate, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin K.

While it is imperative that all the people do need some dosage of vitamins on a daily basis, vitamins could be of immense use to growing children, elderly people, women who are pregnant, and newly crowned mothers lactating the infants. Vitamins are needed the most by the people who have suffered from a minor ailment and are in the process of returning to normal condition.

The vitamins needed by the body can be broadly classified in to two broad groups – water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins.

The food we consume, the fruits, vegetables, starch, fiber and complex carbohydates – whatever may the mixture and composition of the meal we take – include vitamins and are effectively segregated in the digestive system of the body and is put to effective use for the body requirements.

Vitamins are broadly divided into two groups – water-soluble vitamins and fat soluble vitamins.

The vitamins categorized under the B Group, Vitamin C and folate are some of the examples for water-soluble vitamins. These vitamins dissolve in the blood as well as tissue cells easily and as such cannot be stored for a longer period of time. Also, these water-soluble vitamins are vulnerable to heat.

On the other hand, fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the fatty tissues as well as liver. These fat-soluble vitamins are generally found to be more stable than water-soluble vitamins. However, these fat-soluble vitamins, comprising of Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Vitamin K, might be very sensistive to air well as light.

Each of the vitamins have specific purpose and role in the well-being of the body.

Vitamin A: This vitamin is essential for growth of the body and especially helps in keeping the skin as well as mucuous membranes in a healthy manner.

Vitamin B group: This group of vitamins comprise Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12. Vitamins falling under this group are very essential for the effective functioning of the digestive system, the immune system, the circulatory system, the nervous system, the brain and also for the production of new blood cells.

Folate: This type of vitamin is essential for the formation of new cells and especially the growth of the baby in the womb of the mother. It is also vital for the normal growth and development of the children.
Vitamin C: This vitamin is essential for the health of the connective tissues such as collagen and bone cartillage. Vitamin C also helps in absorbing the iron content and also aids in speedy recovery from injuries and or illness.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D is required by the body for absorbing calcium and phosphorous minerals. This vitamin also ensures sound formation of bones and teeth.

Vitamin E: This vitamin actsas an antioxidant and plays an important role in protecting cell membranes from oxidation. It also prevents blocking-up of the artery walls in the heart, and thus protect from heart-related diseases.

Vitamin K: This is a vitamin that aids in the formation of protein in the body and also helps blod clotting.

A right mix of the appropriate vitamins in the right quantities will ensure that you have a healthy life by eating the right mix of food in right quantities.
